Prior to the launch of Hulu Live TV In 2017, Hulu sought out Carbon Five to guide its development teams and ensure a timely launch for both the iOS app and Apple TV app, as well as the web version of the product. Two years later, Carbon Five was tasked with bringing an internal process up to compliance with the Sarbanes Oxley Act (SOX) after Disney’s acquisition of Hulu. At the same time, a different Carbon Five team worked with Hulu to help simplify the way the multitude of its platforms manage and communicate information about user subscriptions.

In order to bring Hulu’s process up to compliance for SOX, the Carbon Five team worked with internal stakeholders to define and prioritize the features, rebuilding an older, unused tool in Python and React. They also integrated with Hulu’s technical and procedural infrastructure, including a robust QA process.

The team working on user subscriptions began with a domain model to help developers and stakeholders create a shared understanding and ubiquitous language. The team then did a bit of work to modernize the platform architecture before setting out for almost a year of work to update the APIs.

Carbon Five transitioned the project back to Hulu developers towards the end of the project, and the tool is now successfully used by the marketing team, streamlining the process of subscriptions and billing.

In addition to centralizing the business logic for subscriptions, Hulu also benefited from some of Carbon Five’s best practices, including improved test coverage, leveling up new team members, and improving communication throughout Hulu’s billing & subscription group.
